Furai Concept |
Could this be the new Mazda RX7?
Mazda's Furai (which means "Sound of the Wind") concept is set to
appear at the North American
International Auto Show this January. Not only will Mazda unveil the
Furai but the new Mazda RX8 is set to make an appearance as well.
While
rumors are spreading that the Furai may be the newly redesigned RX8
itself, this seems unlikely as the Furai's powerplant is a three rotor rotary engine
producing an estimated 450hp.
Franz von Holzhausen, Mazda’s
North American director of design said,
|
“Mazda Furai
purposely blurs boundaries that have traditionally distinguished street
cars from track cars. Historically, there has been a gap between
single-purpose racecars and street-legal models — commonly called
supercars — that emulate the real racers on the road. Mazda Furai
bridges that gap like no car has ever done before.”
|
While the Japanese "Cosmo"
boasted a powerful three rotor years ago in
Japan, North America has yet to see a three rotor powered production
vehicle. If the Furai were produced and sold in North America it would
be for the first time in history.
Mazda RX Source hopes to bring you exclusive coverage of the unveiling
of the Mazda Furai
and the redesigned Mazda
RX8 at the North
American International Auto Show, this January. Stay Tuned. |
